Film review: Prataya Saha's Shonar Khacha hits the right notes

Director Prataya Saha's latest offering 'Shonar Khacha' (The Golden Cage), a short film set in Kolkata of the 1980s, captures the essence of the struggle between preserving a heritage building and surviving the vagaries of changing times.

The story revolves around three members of an erstwhile Zamindari family: two brothers, elder brother Rajatabho and younger brother Rudro, and Rajatabho's wife, Anjali. They live in a palatial, but now dilapidated, heritage house that they cannot afford to maintain anymore. The brothers are in disagreement in selling the house at a cheaper rate.

The film takes the viewers through a journey of loss, sacrifice, and difficult relationships. The dilapidated house and its furniture are as much a character in the film as is Kolkata, a city once known for its grandeur, struggling to keep up with the times.

'Shonar Khacha' is not only well-made, but also thought-provoking. Although the film is essentially about a family struggling to maintain a heritage house, Prataya shows remarkable maturity in how he weaves in Anjali's perspective-adding a layer to the narrative. One needs to understand that this is not just a film for many. They will see a reflection of their own lives in it. Many face similar dilemmas.

The attention to detail is excellent and the attempt to recreate Kolkata of the 1980s must be commended. However, some scenes could have had better transitions.

The highlight of the film is undoubtedly the performances and music. Anshulika Kapoor, Deboprasad Halder, and Sounak Sen Barat bring out the essence of each character with alacrity. The music by Sanjeev T carries the various emotions of the characters through a lyrical flow.

'Shonar Khacha' is a 10-minute film that stays with you much longer than it ends.
