What was it like to be an Indian woman photographer during studio photography days?

Twin sisters Manobina Roy, wife of filmmaker Bimal Roy, and Debalina Mazumder were among India's first women photographers. Their subjects included women, home, household, children and pets spanning across Calcutta, Bombay, Paris and Moscow. They resisted the rigid studio photography of the time and took candid photographs in natural light. The sisters, born in 1919, remained passionate about photography throughout their lives. An exhibition held at Jadunath Bhavan Museum and Resource Centre in the Indian city of Calcutta brought their incredible work into sharp focus
